Improving Water Security Economically

A very powerful method for ensuring that individuals, businesses, corporations, and governments are as water secure as possible is to provide economic incentives for meeting minimum standards of water cleanliness and withdrawal. Mission 2017 has devised a plan that governments can use to create economic incentives for meeting these standards. This plan will be particularly effective in developed countries and countries that suffer from large corporations abusing their water rights, such as the United States, India, and China.

Proposed Plan

1) Water Tariffs: Implement water tariffs tailored to specific regions as an incentive to decrease wasteful water usage.

2) Cap and Trade: Countries should implement a cap and trade system on wastewater pollution.  The central government of each country should create an independent commission to set the cap and determine the total amount of permits.
